Insurance
Despite our professional movers’ best intentions, accidents can happen during a move. For this reason, we offer two insurance plans to best meet your needs.

Fixed rate
Under the law, a moving company’s maximum liability for loss or damage is $0.60 per pound per item in Canada, and $2.00 per pound per item in Québec. This coverage is automatically included in the cost of your local or long distance move. We do not recommend this type of insurance, which is clearly inferior to replacement cost for most household items.

Replacement cost
Replacement cost insurance is the simplest way to protect your household items at a very reasonable cost. With this type of coverage, if an item is damaged while in the care of the moving company, the latter will be responsible for having it repaired. If this is not possible or if the item is lost, the moving company will replace it with a similar item of equivalent quality.

All moving companies are subject to federal and provincial regulations. The nature of belongings shipped varies from “extremely valuable” to “easily replaceable,” which is why numerous conditions apply to the settlement of replacement cost insurance claims. Contact your advisor for more information on these regulations.

*Note: The replacement value of average quality furniture and personal belongings varies between $10 and $12 per pound per item.

Example (taken from ALLIED VAN LINES CANADA claim regulations)
The movers drop your 50-lb. television, for which you paid $700 four years ago. Today, an equivalent television would cost $725.

Coverage – Fixed rate
Canada
At a rate of $0.60 per pound per item, the moving company will pay up to $30 toward the repair/replacement of the television (50 lb. x $0.60 per pound per item).

Québec only
At a rate of $2.00 per pound per item, the moving company will pay up to $100 toward the repair/replacement of the television (50 lb. x $2.00 per pound per item).

Coverage – Replacement cost
The moving company will pay to have the television repaired; if this is not possible, it will pay $725 to replace it with a similar model of equivalent quality. If the moving company offers a cash settlement for an item that cannot be repaired, the damaged item becomes the property of the moving company for its recovery value.
